OOTD: “Golden Girls” dance party at Parlour on Clark (NSFW)

I partnered with The Qu to celebrate all things Golden Girls at their second annual 90s dance pop-culture dance party, Thank You For Being A Friend, at Parlour on Clark on March 23.

It was a helluva night. Excellent costumes. Excellent performances. Excellent runway. There were masks. There were laughs. Even Redeye was there.

I did a burlesque ode to the grrrls, channelling my finest Betty White as Rose as I danced to a remix of the show’s theme song, “Thank You For Being A Friend.”

I received a ton of positive feedback on my performance and outfit. It’s great to feel that support from friends and strangers alike. That, and the shock that comes from seeing a nearly 300-pound woman stripping on stage.

Special appearances also by:

  • Dusty Bahls, Chicago’s premiere drag king
  • Specificity Jones, a theatrical queen
  • Anita Butch, the woman who can do it all from blogging to burlesque
  • Xandra Fairlawn, host for the evening.
  • Shea Couleé, emcee of the Golden-themed runway
  •  DJ Audio Jack spun 80s and 90s jams.
  •  A/S/L Media snapped photos

And this sums up why I love the ladies and why I was so excited to strip in their honor:

The Golden Girls was one of the last great TV shows that brought progressive ideas to a mass audience. The very idea that these women were living valuable lives without being partnered was at the time, and still to some extent now, a radical idea,” said Erin O’Neal of The Qu. “The characters frequently reflected on their positions of privilege, and was one of the first mainstream shows with groundbreaking episodes about LGBTQ issues. The Golden Girls, above all, exemplified the idea of chosen family and how those chosen families are valid, necessary and beautiful.”

Some of my favorite shots from the night are below, and the full set is on the ASL Media website. And the outfit details are minimal: I thrifted the vintage peach dress, the slip and the white gloves. I made the red shimmy belt, fringe bra, beaded panties and sequin tassel pasties.
